Space@Hopkins is pleased to announce its 2017 seed funding program. The goal of this program is to provide seed funding for civilian space related projects at Johns Hopkins University that: (1) are relevant to Space@Hopkins and JHU institutional research priorities; (2) are interdisciplinary; (3) provide undergraduate research opportunities, (4) have good prospects for leading to successful external research support.
Request for Proposals (RFP)
Space@Hopkins invites faculty to submit proposals detailing their ideas for research. Proposals should adhere to the four main goals (1-4) listed above.
Eligibility:Eligible applicants are faculty and research scientists from Johns Hopkins University who can serve as Principal and Co-Investigators, and who have not previously been selected to receive funding for the same project in the past. Preference will be given to interdisciplinary partnerships between faculty/research scientists who hold appointments from at least two Johns Hopkins University departments and/or divisions. Please contact us if you need assistance in finding an interdisciplinary partner for your research ideas.
Award Amounts: The total budget request for a proposal may not exceed $25,000. Please see specific budget guidelines below. The project period is up to one year.
Obligations of Award Recipients
Award recipients will be expected to:
- Complete proposed research within one year. No-cost extensions will not be offered and funds remaining at the end of the one-year period will be returned to Space@Hopkins.
- Prepare a slide and an oral presentation to the annual Space@Hopkins symposium.
- Submit a proposal for external research funding through Space@Hopkins, preferably within one year of completion of the seed grant project.
- Submit a progress report to Space@Hopkins by the end of the project. The report must include information on grant proposals and publications to scholarly journals (including those submitted, pending and in progress).
- Acknowledge the support of Space@Hopkins in publications or presentations that result from this award.
- Title Page – Include proposal title, investigators, their titles, their departments, and e-mail addresses.
- Narrative – Not to exceed 3 pages. Must include the following (a-d):
- Statement of the Multidisciplinary Problem or Area of Investigation
- Project Goals and Objectives – Include the research objectives and developments that will be accomplished during the seed grant project phase.
- Future Funding and goals – State how this project will help the proposing team attract new or additional external funding following the seed grant phase. What funding agencies and programs might be approached with future proposals?
- Multidisciplinary Team – Describe how this project will bring together investigators from different parts of the university, and if this is a new group of collaborators or if members have worked together before. One of the investigators must be designated as the Principal Investigator, with the remaining investigators as Co-Investigators.
- Budget and Budget Justification – The proposed budget is not to exceed $25,000 for a period up to 12 months. Space@Hopkins will support all normal costs with the exception of PI or Co-I salaries. There is no facilities and administrative costs associated with these seed grants. The budget should present any additional funds (internal or external) that will be combined with Space@Hopkins for completion of the seed grant project.
- Curriculum Vitae (one or two pages for each investigator, in any standard (NSF, NASA, NIH) format.
Deadlines and Evaluation
Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Friday May 19, 2017. Please upload all required documents to the Space@Hopkins website as a single PDF document.
The review committee may seek budget adjustments before making final decisions by the end of June, 2017. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2017. The review committee will consider several factors before making a decision. Those factors include: how well-aligned the proposals are to Space@Hopkins goals, the quality and promise of the proposed projects, how well the selected projects accomplish a healthy balance between the different schools and research areas, and how to maximize the impact of the modest investment.
The PI should ensure the proposal contains all required elements and is clearly written. As it is not possible to have an expert in every sub-field represented by proposals, it is imperative that the proposing team make an approachable and convincing argument why this research is important and should be funded at this time.
